Name: Martyn Sollars
Age: 19
University: Teesside
Subject: International Emergency Relief Engineering
Year of Study: Second Year Undergraduate.
Paddling Experience...?
I started paddling towards the end of 1998 when I was taken on my first white water river in Wales. I then paddled a few other rivers but did most of my paddling on the Dee and the Tryweryn I then dabbled in slalom and marathon until about 2002 I started paddling more regularly. I did more and more rivers and went to the Alps on two consecutive years. I am also going to the White Nile, Uganda at the start of June.
So, when was your last swim?
It was on the Tryweryn below Davis Bridge on the upper section. It was in the recirculating eddy on the right hand side so I can’t even claim that it was on anything hard. Although I have had a few lucky escapes since then!
What's your favourite river?
Tricky one, I see it being a three cornered contest between the Loisach (Germany) for its tight and technical rapids, the Sesisa (Italy) for its volume and big rapids or the Inn in Austria for its huge volume and massive waves.
What was your first boat?
Started off with a Microbat 240 which was a million times too big. I’m now paddling a Kingpin, but I always use old faithful, the Microbat on any serious river.
So, you looking forward to the expedition?
Yup indeed. The concept of going to do what I love in a place that most people have never heard of is a great idea. It will be a grand experience.
